Wisdom of the Yoga Sutras

Written by the sage Patañjali, the Yoga Sutras offer a timeless roadmap to the deeper vision and purpose of yoga. Far beyond physical postures, these teachings guide us toward clarity, self-awareness, and inner freedom. In today’s fast-paced world, what is the true aim of yoga? How do we cultivate awareness and access deeper states of freedom? This workshop bridges philosophy and embodied practice, bringing the sutras to life in a way that feels relevant, grounded, and transformational.
In this workshop, we’ll explore:
- The Yoga Sutras as a universal and practical teaching
- Core principles and real-life application
- Key sutras through chanting and reflection
- An in-depth asana practice leading into meditation
- Classical pranayama and meditation techniques
- Broadening your understanding of what yoga truly is
Derik first encountered yoga in 1991 when he first met and became a student of Baba Hari Dass, a life long yogic adept.
He went on to be a student of the Iyengar method for eight years; and a dedicated student of Richard Freeman, Tias Little and Rod Stryker; completing multiple yoga teacher trainings and immersive courses along the way.
In 2001 he became a full time yoga teacher, accumulating over 10,000 hours of experience instructing workshops, retreats, and YTTs. Additionally, he is a professor of yoga at Metro College, and founder of Denver Yoga Underground, providing in-depth yoga study in a grassroots format.
